TEN AMERICAN PAINTERS. Small printed announcement for their important 1898 exhibition, Signed by all 10 artists: Frank Benson, Joseph Decamp, T. W. Dewing, Childe Hassam, Willard Metcalf Robet Reid, Edward Simmons, E. C. Tarbell, J. H. Twatchman, and J. Alden Weir. 2 pages on 2 sheets, all the signatures on the second sheet; each sheet mounted, mat burn. New York, 1898

  • Notes: Although inspired by Impressionism, the importance of the American Ten (as they were called after this 1898 exhibition) was to be seen on the Modernist movement. In response to the conservatism of the National Academy of Design, these artists resigned from the Academy. The independence of the 1898 exhibition (and subsequent Ten American Painters exhibitions) influenced the creation of the famed 1912 Armory show.
