(TEXAS.) Slavery. Correspondence Relative to the General Abolition of Slavery in Texas, and Throughout the World. 7 pages. Folio (13 x 8 inches), self-wrappers, tastefully rebacked with archival tape, stitched; manuscript serial page numbers in upper corners. Title from printed docketing panel. [London], 1 March 1848

  • Notes: A transcript of 5 letters dated 1843-44 between the Earl of Aberdeen as British foreign secretary, British foreign minister Richard Pakenham, and U.S. Secretary of State John Calhoun. Calhoun protests over British efforts to thwart slavery in the Republic of Texas, explaining that freed slaves in the northern states had "invariably sunk into vice and pauperism . . . deafness, blindness, insanity, and idiocy," and describes slavery as "a political institution essential to the peace, safety, and prosperity of those states of the Union in which it exists." Printed for the British House of Commons, and later compiled in their diplomatic blue book. Only 3 copies in WorldCat.
