Notes: Allan Randall Freelon Sr. (1895-1960), has an impressive biography: early talent won him a full scholarship to the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and he later earned degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple's Tyler School of Art. After serving in WWI he began teaching in Philadelphia public schools, becoming supervisor of art instruction for the entire school district. According to one biographer, he was the first African-American to hold such a position anywhere in the U.S.
In 1927, he began studying at the Barnes Foundation, where he was exposed to the work of the French Impressionists. On summer breaks from school, Freelon traveled to Gloucester, MA where he painted some of his best seascapes. This painting, Our Lady of Good Voyage, was painted in Gloucester during this period.
Freelon first exhibited in New York in 1921, then became a regular exhibitor at the Harmon Foundation's annual art exhibitions. His prints are owned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum and the Woodmere Museum; however, most of his works are in private collections.
An exhibit of Freelon's work, initially shown at North Carolina Central University's Art Museum at Durham, was moved to the Woodmere Art Museum and from there to several East Coast venues in 2004.
this is the first time one of his oil paintings has been offered at auction.
