The King's Book.

A Necessary Doctrine and Erudition for any Chrysten man.

London: Thomas Berthelet, 1543.
Octavo, one of three variants printed in 1543, title printed within woodcut compartment; with "This Boke bounde in paper bourdes or in claspes, not to be solde above .xii.d." on recto of final leaf; with colophon on verso; bound in full 19th century textured leather (worn, boards in danger of becoming detached, with a patchy old spine repair); sold by Henry Sotheran & Co. with book ticket; bookplate torn away from inside front board; front free endleaf detached; 5 1/2 x 3 3/4 in.

STC 5173; ESTC S107822; all three 1543 editions are rare in ESTC, this variant shows 2 U.S. locations.

The King's Book was published to replace the Bishop's book, to include certain changes Henry VIII wanted to make. For example, the doctrine of justification by faith alone was completely rejected (against Cranmer's wishes).
