Tomi Ungerer 1931 Black Power/White Power. 1967 27.125 x 11.125 inches. Condition B.. restored losses and restoration in margins, discolorations in image. Born in Strasbourg, Ungerer immigrated to America in 1956, living for 13 years in New York before moving to Canada and then Ireland. This giant of graphic design has explored almost every venue open to graphic designers: posters, both satiricaland commercial Air India, New York Times; numerous illustrated books for adults and children; magazine illustration; objects and sculpture There seems to be no limit to his imagination or creative stylings: he could switch from the most gentle image for children to the most violently satirical style. During his time in the US, he was an activist for many human rights issues. Of the thousands of images that were created to fight racism, he certainly designed one of the most simple and powerful. Its strength might be said to lie in its simplicity; using only two colors, the poster nevertheless sends a direct and strong message, producing an image that must remain an icon of the period. ref.
