Notes: Ethel Sloane was a young lady whom Twain met in the months before his death during his final trip to Bermuda. Records show that he enjoyed the company of the Sloane family on at least a few occasions. Although Sloane was not an official "angel-fish," the correspondence in this lot displays Twain''s typical charming way with the young ladies who formed this group. Included here are: a signed calling card from Stormfield (along with a small envelope containing 5 unsigned cards) * Autograph quotation Signed. 1 small 8vo sheet on Stormfield letterhead, dated 15 January [1908?] * Autograph Poem ("A Valentine") Inscribed to Ethel (as Etheldoralinda), 5 stanzas about a woman named "Aunt Lizzie." 1 folded 8vo sheet on Stormfield letterhead. Not signed but dated Bermuda 14 February 1910; accompanied by original envelope (hand delivered by Twain''s butler Claude Beauchotte) * a Twain story titled The Turning Point of My Life torn from an issue of Harper''s Bazaar with a note at the top from Sloane "Given to me by Mark Twain at Bermuda in January 1910." * Two candid photographs from a boating trip; one of Twain and Ethel Sloane; the other with Twain and Ethel''s father Robert Sloane (as marked on versos). The boating trip and participants are mentioned in a letter by Twain as published in Mark Twain''s Letters 1907-1910, A. B. Paine, NY 1917. Twain''s health declined soon after this correspondence was written and he died a few days after his return to the States in April.
