TWAIN, MARK. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.L. Clemens,"

WRITE LETTER OR "PHRENOGRAPH" IT? TWAIN, MARK. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.L. Clemens," to "Dear Mrs. Walker," stating that he had purposely misspelled her name because everyone misspells his name, promising to spell her name correctly in the future if she would write and send an article to a magazine, and remarking that he had considered "phrenographing" his letter for the sake of experiment. 3 pages, 8vo, each written on one side of a sheet; faint toning at bottom edges, remnants of prior mounting at corners of terminal page verso. Hartford, 31 Oct[ober 18]81

  • Notes: "Laws bless you. I done it apurpose. Nobody ever gets my name right, (witness the enclosed [not present] first two envelops [sic] I fished out of the waste-basket this moment), therefore I never put anybody else's name right, unless it is specially requested.
"Come, now, please write that article & dispatch it to the magazine. Mine has gone where it won't appear in print for several months, I judge--so you see, yours would be almost certain to come out ahead of mine. Do it, & I will retire form my rigid rule & spell your name right--always.
"I had mind to phrenograph (yes, that's correct) this letter to you, for the sake of the experiment . . . ; whereas upon my word & sacred honor & I wish I may never die if such a sordid thought as that ever entered my head for a moment. . . . One of the inconvenientest things about this phrenography is, that you can't run it over & fix it right & slick it up--no, it goes in the rough."
Twain demonstrates his incredulity of the claims of phrenologists in his autobiography, where he recounts an experiment he conducted by arranging for a phrenologist to examine him a number of times and comparing the resulting "phrenographs"--all of which differed significantly. See The Autobiography of Mark Twain, ed. Neider, 1959.
