Clemens," to "Dear Mrs. Wayland," expecting the arrival of something that makes his mouth water, sending his love, complaining of illness and toothache, reporting that he is nevertheless more content than ever, stating that he and Albert [Bigelow] Paine had invented the best game ever, and inviting her to visit along with the Littletons, the Freemans and Marjorie Clinton. With a postscript, written vertically at the top of the first page, noting that what he had been expecting had arrived. 2 1/2 pages, small 8vo, personal stationery, written on the first and second and terminal pages of a folded sheet. With the original envelope. Redding, CT, 29 Sept[ember 19]09

  • Notes: "That bushel must be about due, now, & my mouth is watering. . . .
    ". . . I hope you are well. I'm not. I haven't had a well day for 4 months, & shan't have one for 4 more. . . . Perhaps Providence will provide. He has that reputation.
    "However, I have a noble good time, right along, & was never quite so well contented in my life. Albert Paine comes over every day at mid-afternoon & plays billiards until 7. We have invented a game which furnishes lots of rest, & can't tire anybody. The best game that was ever invented. We have played it straight along without a change for more than 3 months . . . .
    "By mid-October I cal'late to begin to shout for company again. . . . I hope to have 2 or 3 guests in the house forever more."
    In a postscript, written near the first sentence: "P.S. They have arrived!"
