TYLER, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed, to Messrs. Middleton & Beal, regarding an unpaid bill for White House furnishings.

TYLER, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed, to Messrs. Middleton & Beal, regarding an unpaid bill for White House furnishings. 1½ pages, 8vo, written on recto and verso of a single sheet; minor loss to upper left corner, faint scattered staining, faint bleedthrough affecting upper half of recto, folds, remnants of wax seal on verso. "Sherwood Forest" [Charles City, VA], 7 October 1845

". . . In relation to your account against the gov't for articles furnished the President's house in 1842-3 amounting to eleven Dollars it is impossible for me to speak with any precision--such articles so charged were certainly necessary, but this is all I can say about it. The certificate of James Wilkins is pointed to the fact of their having been purchased--at the time of the purchase I had nothing to do with the matter having entrusted the whole business to my private Secretary, who has settled up his accounts with the Treasury. I should think that your own affidavit to the fact that the articles had been furnished and that they had not been paid for would be considered sufficient."
