"UNCLE SAM WON'T PAY EVERY NIGHT..." (MILITARY.) McArthur, John. Autograph Colored Soldier's Letter Signed, to a friend of the family, asking for money and requesting that his photo be passed along to his mother and sister. 3 pages, 8vo. Readville, 25 February 1864
- Notes: Written by private John McArthur, a colored soldier who enlisted with the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment on 03 February 1864. He served until 05 June 1865 when he was mustered out at Norfolk Hospital. He saw action at Petersburg and Bermuda 100 and was also a guard at the prison at Point Lookout. The 5th saw almost ceaseless action in various campaigns. McArthur's comments and complaints about army life are often laced with a healthy degree of cynicism, "I want to come home. Wee cant get money here as wee can at home Uncle Sam won't pay every night..."
