Both Vanessa Bell and artist Duncan Grant were members of the Bloomsbury group of writers, philosophers, and artists who discussed agnosticism and philosophical questions of pure goodness and beauty. Other members included E.M. Forster, Henry Lamb, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, and Leonard and Virginia Woolf, Bell's sister. The Bloomsbury group often met at Bell's home, which she shared with her husband Clive Bell, an art critic. Bell began an affair with Grant and the two would live together for the rest of their lives. In October 1916, Bell with her family and Grant with his lover, the writer David Garnett, moved to the Sussex countryside so that Grant could avoid conscription into the army. Bell and Grant would have a child in 1918, and continued to work on commissions together, including the Famous Women Dinner Service of 1932.
