(VERMONT.) Humphreys, David. Through his aide, Washington disavows a Vermont pamphlet--but will not suppress it. Autograph Letter Signed "D. Humphreys A.D.C." as Lieutenant Colonel and Washington''s aide-de-camp, to Colonel Henry Jackson of the 4th Massachusetts Regiment. 2 pages, 9 x 7 1/2 inches, on one sheet, with docketing on verso; minor toning. (MRS) Headquarters, 10 February 1783

  • Notes: In 1783, Vermont was still a nominally independent country, chafing against meddling from Congress. A pamphlet appeared on 9 January titled "A Copy of a Remonstrance, of the Council of the State of Vermont, Against the Resolutions of Congress . . . which Interfere with their Internal Police." The pamphlet quoted General Washington in an unfavorable light. Washington''s aide here writes on his behalf: "Notwithstanding the Commander in Chief considers the remonstrance of Vermont as a very uncandid performance in some instances & perhaps calculated to effect some sinister purposes, he does not think it expedient to suppress the circulation of it, nor wish to prevent the impartial world from judging for itself. If after the distribution you should have a couple of copies left, we will thank you for them." Provenance: sold by dealer Catherine Barnes to the consignor.
