(VERMONT.) Legal case file from a suit by Ira Allen against Joshua Stanton.

(VERMONT.) Legal case file from a suit by Ira Allen against Joshua Stanton. 8 manuscript documents in one folder, various sizes; some documents worn, with full separations at folds to Allen''s complaint. (MRS) Burlington, VT, 1801-03

  • Notes: This complex case began in 1783. Ira Allen, one of Vermont''s founding fathers, had wanted to purchase a large parcel of land in Lutterlough township. The owner, Colonel Henry Lutterlough, was then at the American army headquarters in Newburgh, NY, so Allen sent Joshua Stanton to handle the negotiations. Stanton asserted that his payment for this service was to be 3000 acres of the land, of which he took possession. 18 years later, Allen took it to court, and Stanton was ordered to return the land. Included in this lot are 8 court documents, most notably a contemporary copy of Allen''s complaint dated 10 December 1801, Stanton''s 28 February 1803 response, and the June 1803 final decree signed by Royall Tyler. Inventory available upon request. Provenance: William L. Parkinson auction, 16 August 1997, lot 7, to the consignor.
