Victor Vasarely 1908-1997 Le Plastocoat. 1934 10.25 x 8.75 inches. Condition A. Mixed media on board. Originally from Hungary, Vasarely immigrated to Paris in 1931 he is famous for having been the founder of the Kinetic art movement in 1955, and for years, he worked opticalillusions into his paintings. What is lesser known is that he also worked constantly in advertising, decoration, and graphic design after he settled in France. Tom Purvis, in his book Poster Progress The Studio, London-NYC reproduces three of Vasereiy's works that he deems as "brilliant design." Advertising a type of paint that protected against various types of corrosion, this work, in its composition and juxtaposition of colors and shapes, is brilliant indeed, the geometric evocation of different types of pollution. "Plastocoat" is also quite a unique piece for Vasarely, in that it isnot really influenced by the graphic trends of the Art Deco period but rather owes more to the geometric experiments of Herbin and the Abstraction-Creation movement. An extremely clever and interesting piece that shows us, as early as 1934, the direction Vasareiy's artistic style would ultimately take.
