The Sword in the Stone - Arthur / Mickey Mouse Club - Jiminy Cricket animation cel setup. 1963 / circa 1957.

Gouache on celluloid.
Details are in keeping with Art Corner setups, including the correct background print and a gold colored Art Corner COA sticker on verso.

Production:
A fun two animation cel Art Corner setup featuring Wart (aka the future King Arthur) in sparrow form from The Sword in the Stone (1963) and Jiminy Cricket from a late 1950s Mickey Mouse Club educational short.
12 x 14 in. (30.5 x 35.6 cm.)

  • Provenance:
    Private collection, New York.

    Further information:
The matching scene for the Wart cel appears at the beginning of the famous "Wizard's Duel" sequence, when Archimedes the owl and Wart are perched on a branch and the owl explains to the puzzled boy/sparrow: "It's a battle of wits. The players change themselves into different things in an attempt to destroy one another." To which (in this shot at 1 hr 4 mins 30 sec), Arthur nervously replies: "Destroy?" Cels of Wart as a sparrow are especially hard to find.

Art Corner cels were originally sold at Disneyland as inexpensive souvenirs, and as such, the setups often featured unusual pairings of characters from unrelated productions. Today the Art Corner setups are sought after collectibles, and are a major reason that cels still survive from Disney's classic films.
