(WAR OF 1812.) Drayton, William. Letterbook kept as commander of the Charleston harbor defenses.

(WAR OF 1812.) Drayton, William. Letterbook kept as commander of the Charleston harbor defenses. [185] pages, manuscript. 4to, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, original 1/2 calf, moderate wear, with cover tag reading "District Letter Book" in manuscript. South Carolina, 25 June 1812 to 4 October 1813

  • Notes: When he began this letterbook, William Drayton (1776-1846) was Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th U.S. Infantry at Fort Moultrie, but he was soon promoted to Colonel of the 18th Infantry, commanding the harbor defenses of Charlestown. His later letters were written at the Charleston-area fortifications at Hampstead, Haddrells, James Island, and Fort Johnson. The letters discuss recruiting, soldier's complaints, efforts to improve the neglected forts, and defective provisions. His long 16 May 1813 letter to Col. Huger describes the inadequacies of the forts and troops in great detail. Many of the letters are addressed to Maj. Gen. Thomas Pinckney, commander of the forces throughout the south. The letterbook is written in several different hands, some of them apparently secretarial, and consists entirely of retained copies of official military letters by Col. Drayton. After the war, Drayton served several terms as a U.S. Representative for South Carolina before moving to Philadelphia.
