(WAR OF 1812.) Hull, William. Autograph Letter Signed concerning his army's route to Detroit.

(WAR OF 1812.) Hull, William. Autograph Letter Signed concerning his army's route to Detroit. One page, 10 x 8 inches; slight separations at folds, unevenly browned, tape stains on verso. Staunton, Ohio, 3 June 1812

  • Notes: William Hull (1753-1825) was governor of Michigan Territory, and as war began to seem imminent in 1812, he was also appointed Brigadier General commanding the Army of the Northwest. At the time this letter was written, he was awaiting a declaration of war, organizing his troops north of Dayton, Ohio and preparing to move north to Detroit. This letter was written to Hull's quartermaster general James Taylor, and explains his rationale for the route he took through Urbana, Ohio: "The state of the waters is now such that boats cannot ascend the river to Lorimier [Fort Loramie?]. I likewise am satisfied . . . that the Army can march to the foot of the Rapids sooner by 4 or 5 days by Urbanna than by Lorimier. You will therefore make provision for the transportation . . . by the most direct route from Dayton to Urbanna."
A month after this letter was written, Hull attempted a foray into Canada, but quickly retreated to Detroit. On August 16, Fort Detroit was attacked by a much smaller British force, but Hull quickly surrendered, one of the low points of the war from the American perspective. Quartermaster Taylor, recipient of this letter, was disgusted and refused to help Hull draw up the surrender. Hull was court-martialed and sentenced to death for the surrender, but pardoned by President Madison.
