  • Notes: One of the leading sources of American political and military news during and after the War of 1812. The Battle of Fort McHenry occurred as part of a failed British assault on Baltimore on 13 September 1814. Niles and his staff, publishing from Baltimore, were on the scene. That week, the Register was not published, but on 24 September they returned with this apology: "Being disturbed by the enemy, and having every person in the office, a small boy excepted, under arms, last Saturday passed without a publication of the Weekly Register." The assault on Baltimore is described in great detail, noting that "The attack on Fort McHenry was terribly grand and magnificent . . . never, perhaps from the time of the invention of cannon to the present day, were the same number of pieces fired with so rapid succession." Francis Scott Key was inspired by this same barrage to write the "Star-Spangled Banner." with--The American Weekly Messenger or Register. Volume I. 8vo, contemporary 1/2 calf, worn; dampstained. Philadelphia, 1813-14 * Journal of the Senate of the United States. 8vo, contemporary 1/2 calf, moderate wear. Covers December 1813 to April 1814. Washington, 1813 [i.e. 1814].
