WASHINGTON, GEORGE. Autograph Letter Signed, "Go:Washington," to J. Hector St. John Crèvecœur ("Mr. de Crevecœur"), sending letters [not present] to be forwarded to recipients in France. 1 page, 4to; extreme end of "t" crossbar in signature truncated, folds. Mount Vernon, 18 Aug[ust] 1788

  • Notes: "Will you permit me to take the liberty of addressing the enclosed Letters to your care, to be forwarded when a conveyance shall offer for France?
    "I will make no apology for the freedom, because you have encouraged me to use it. . . ."
    The letters that Washington entrusted to Crèvecœur probably included a letter to the Marquis de Lotbinière, thanking him for congratulations on the ratification of the Constitution by New York (on July 28). See Washington's letterbook entries, LOC, August 18, 1788.
    Michel-Guillaume Jean de Crèvecœur (1735-1813), known in America as J. Hector St. John, was a French-American essayist and author of Letters from an American Farmer, who served as French consul in New York between 1783 and 1790.
