WEBSTER, DANIEL. Autograph Letter Signed, "Dan'l Webster," to physician and Dartmouth classmate Cyrus Perkins ("My D'r friend"),

HIS BROTHER'S DEATH: "I CANNOT...DESCRIBE THE EFFECT OF THIS...ON MY FEELINGS" WEBSTER, DANIEL. Autograph Letter Signed, "Dan'l Webster," to physician and Dartmouth classmate Cyrus Perkins ("My D'r friend"), discussing the sudden death and funeral of his own brother. 3 pages, 4to, written on a folded sheet; separations at folds repaired with tissue, staining along upper edges. (SFC) Boston, 17 April 1829

"You will have heard of the sudden death of my Brother. . . . It seems to me I never heard of a death so instantaneous. He fell in an instant, without any effort to save himself, & without any struggle, or sign of consciousness, after he reached the floor.
". . . The funeral was . . . the next day. Mrs. W's constitution is feeble, & I know not how she could get thro' the dreadful scene. . . . My Brother has left two daughters--one 14, & one 12 yrs old; & a wife, a fine woman, to whom he had been married about 4 yrs. . . .
"This event . . . has affected me very much. . . . He has been my reliance, thro' life, & I have derived much of its happiness from his fraternal affection. I am left, the sole survivor of my family. . . . I confess I cannot well describe the effect of this event on my feelings. . . ."
