WEBSTER, DANIEL. Autograph Letter Signed, "Dan'lWebster," to [Arthur?] Livermore ("My Dear Sir"),

WEBSTER, DANIEL. Autograph Letter Signed, "Dan'lWebster," to [Arthur?] Livermore ("My Dear Sir"), expressing his demoralization after a number of failures, and hoping to make progress with legislation relating to tariffs and the Sub-Treasury. 1½ pages, 4to, written on recto and verso of single sheet; marginal discoloration from prior matting, faint uneven toning overall, short closed separation at horizontal fold. (SFC) [Washington], 5 August [1845?]

"I believe we can do nothing more here, this session. Everything worked badly, after you left us. I had one hope, which I never communicated, I think, even to you. By accident, that also failed, at the last moment.
"I see nothing left, but to strengthen members[?] against Dec[embe]r, & if the Treasury should then be in a poor state, we may be able to do something, both with the Tariff & the Sub-Treasury. I shall try to get away . . . if I can get thro' the preparation of my speech for the Press. I am exhausted, with fear & fatigue."
