WELLS, H.G. Autograph Letter Signed, to "Dear Miss [Sheila Kaye?] Smith,"

WELLS, H.G. Autograph Letter Signed, to "Dear Miss [Sheila Kaye?] Smith," giving advice to an emerging writer concerning contracts with publishers. 1 page, small 4to, personal stationery. (MRS) Dunmow, [circa 1910]

  • Notes: "There is no getting away from the agreement that I can see. You are hooked for the next two novels. But there is no limit of length specified. A novel need not be longer than 40,000 words & I am ready to go into the witness box to testify as much. . . . Give the American publisher the fullest liberty to fix dates of publication & so on . . . . But the real thing to do is to choke him off with a short novel--which also you can sell serially to a magazine. . . ."
