WILLIAM GARNETT (1916-2006)
Plowed Field, Arvin, California. 1951.
Silver print, the image measuring 13½x10½ inches (34.3x26.7 cm.), flush mounted, with Garnett's credit stamp, and Peter Pollack's Art Institute Chicago stamp, on mount verso.

Provenance
The Collection of Neil Robert Berzak

Peter Pollack, a photography historian, author and art curator, was a prominent member of the art community in Chicago. He served as Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1945 to 1957 and then director of the American Federation of Arts.

  • Condition: Garnett's vintage photograph Plowed Field, Arvin, California, 1951 is in nearly excellent condition. The tones of the print are clear, bright and contrasty, with beautiful delineations within the patterns, which gives this aerial view an abstract rendering.

Under close examination in strong raking light, we might notice a few scattered and exceedingly faint tiny scuffs, mostly located in the upper right quadrant. This is hardly noticeable, even in strong raking light, and not at all apparent under typical viewing conditions. There is also a minuscule spec of emulsion loss in the lower left corner. Otherwise, the surface is clean and neat.

The print has no margins, and the extreme edges evidence some minuscule tiny chips, but this is also minor and does not detract from the overall presentation.

The mount verso is clean, with Garnett's credit stamp, and Peter Pollack's Art Institute Chicago stamp, on mount verso.
