mostly concerning political appointments, including the a possibility of a Circuit Judgeship vacancy, thanking for his remarks in the New York Tribune, and expressing understanding that many in Texas prefer Roosevelt to Taft as a presidential candidate. One with holograph postscript: "I haven't forgotten my promises." Each 1 page, 4to or small 4to, on "War Department" or White House stationery; chipping to right edge of May 1908 letter, horizontal folds. One with the original envelope.

  • Notes: 27 May 1908: "On my return from Panama I find your letter . . . . I appreciate and respect your decided preference for President Roosevelt as a candidate, and quite understand how anxious men in the South--indeed men all over the country--can be to secure the strength of his name in the electoral contest which is to come this year. Certainly I should be the last to oppose his nomination, and should not have thought of allowing my name to be considered, were he not so insistent in his refusal to run. . . ."
