Group of 6 modernist photographs of the autogyro Pitcairn PCA-2. A series of images that show the plane in flight, on a flight field, and the interior. Toned silver prints, the images measuring approximately 13x10¼ inches (33x26 cm.), and the reverse, each double mounted, the larger mounts 17½x14 inches (44.4x35.6 cm.), and slightly smaller, each with Rittase's signature in pencil on mount recto and his full or partial label with the print number in ink on mount verso. 1930s

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: This group of photographs of the autogyro Pitcairn PCA-2 is overall in very good condition. The toned prints display exquisite contrasts and fine details. Under examination in strong raking light, some prints are in excellent condition, some others evidence a few faint surface impressions as described below.

    Print 1 (Interior 1): excellent condition. Exceedingly faint foxing spots on the mount, not entering the print area. Mount slightly soiled

    Print 2 (Interior 2): excellent condition. Exceedingly faint foxing spots on the mount, not entering the print area. Mount slightly soiled

    Print 3 (Interior cockpit): Very good condition. A faint linear faint impression along the surface. Not immediately apparent, nor distracting but visible under close examination in the dark area of the image. Exceedingly faint foxing spots on the mount, not entering the print area. Mount slightly soiled

    Print 4 (Plane on a field): excellent condition. In raking light, traces of silvering. Pencil trace on the mount slightly entering the image area. Hardly noticeable and unobtrusive. Mount soiled and corners rubbed with some tears

    Print 5 (Plane on air): Good condition. Two horizontal creases in the cloud area with no emulsion loss. While apparent, these are not obtrusive to the image. Mount soiled and with foxing spots.

    Print 6 (close up cockpit). Excellent condition. Small surface impression with a dimple in the upper left edge. Slightly entering the image area. very discreet and not apparent under normal viewing condition. Mount slightly soiled.
