(WORLD WAR I--CHEMICAL WARFARE) First major gas attack by the Germans against the Allies at Ypres, Belgium.

(WORLD WAR I--CHEMICAL WARFARE)
First major gas attack by the Germans against the Allies at Ypres, Belgium.
On April 22, 1915, German forces shock Allied soldiers along the western front by firing more than 150 tons of lethal chlorine gas against two French colonial divisions at Ypres, Belgium. Their attack featured a weapon that had not been used before on the Western Front--poison gas--and it devastated the Allied line. Silver print, the image measuring 6 7/8x9¼ inches (17.5x23.5 cm.), the mount 8x10½ inches (20.3x26.7 cm.); accompanied by a mounted typed caption. 1915

Provenance: Private Collection, New York

  • Condition: The historical photograph is overall in very good condition.

Under close examination, the surface of the print doesn't evidence any inconsistencies except for a faint patina of silvering in the dark areas of the smoke. Also there is a narrow band of warming on the left and upper edges of the print. This is visible in our catalogue illustration.

The print has no margins and its edges don't present any chip or loss. However, the upper two corners of the original mount are missing. The mount verso is clean.

A typed caption on a board with details about the attack accompanies the photograph.
