(WORLD WAR ONE.) The Mortal Blow! Uncle Sam Ready to Revenge the Lusitania's Victims.

(WORLD WAR ONE.) The Mortal Blow! Uncle Sam Ready to Revenge the Lusitania's Victims. Chromolithograph, 20 x 26½ inches, with alternate title in Italian below; minor edge wear. New York: Italian Book Co., 1917

  • Notes: An Italian-American publisher celebrates the increasing involvement of the United States in the war. Italy joined the Allies in 1915, and the sinking of the Lusitania by a German U-boat in 1915 fanned popular American sentiment as well. The United States officially declared war on 6 April 1917. While the arrival of large numbers of American troops in Europe was still a year away, American financial support made an immediate difference. Here we see the Kaiser yelling across the Atlantic and brandishing his sword. Uncle Sam responds by literally throwing money at the problem--in the form of a barrel full of gold coins "in defense of liberty and justice" which smashes the Kaiser in the head and destroys his cannons. The grateful leaders of Allied stand back and applaud. None in OCLC.
