“NOT ONE SEAT IS AVAILABLE”

247

MEYERBEER, GIACOMO. Autograph Letter Signed, “Meyerbeer,” to an

unnamed recipient (“Monsieur”), in French, offering his own ticket to the sold-out pre-

miere of his opera,

Le prophète

[not present]. 1 page, 8vo, embossed personal stationery, with

integral blank; cello tape at upper left corner, folds; matted with a portrait and framed.

Paris, 15 April 1849

[500/750]

Following your desire that you . . . would like to have one seat reserved at the premiere of

Prophète, I asked the administration of the Opera, which responded to me that everything is

already rented out and that not one seat is available.

If . . . you wished to do me the honor of accepting the ticket included herein that belongs to

me, I will have the honor to be able to offer it to you . . . .”

“I MERELYWRITE MUSIC AND LYRICS FOR SHOWS”

PORTER, COLE. Typed Letter Signed, to Paris Opéra Ballet dancer Micheline

Bardin, recommending a NewYork agent with a contact in Hollywood. 1 page, 4to, “The

Waldorf Astoria” stationery; horizontal folds. NewYork, 10 November 1954

[300/400]

. . . As for mentioning that I produce shows: it is incorrect. I merely write music and lyrics for

shows.

. . . I highly recommend the following agent: LESTER SCHURR . . . .

I cannot assure you that he can get you work in this country, but I can vouch for his complete

honesty, besides which he has a brother, Louis Schurr, in Hollywood, who is completely rep-

utable; and this makes a very good tie-up with both centers of entertainment: NewYork City,

N.Y. and Los Angeles, California. . . .”
