Though I am taking the medicine of silence, my regimen is not so absolute that I cannot allow

myself a few conversations. I will be much charmed to receive Dr. Merivale. I would go get him

if I were in a better state. . . . [H]e will always be sure to find me in the morning at 10 o’clock.

. . .You would be very kind to accompany him, if you have nothing better to do that day.”

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French writer and statesman, author of

Democracy

in America,

and minister of foreign affairs in 1849.
