The magazine,

Ver Sacrum

[Sacred Spring], was the official printed vehicle of the Vereinigung Bildender

Künstler Oesterreichs, the group responsible for the Vienna Secession. The magazine first appeared in

1898. For a short period beginning in 1897, Mucha was a member of the Viennese Secession. In

addition to his cover design, this issue also contained two of his designs for the

Chocolat Masson

calendar.
