The Savoy Ballroom was a medium sized ballroom for music and public dancing in located
between 140th and 141st Streets on Lenox Avenue in New Yorkís Harlem. It was in opera-
tion from March 12, 1926 to July 10, 1958. It was owned by a Jewish gangster, Moe Gale,
who some say was a front for Al Capone. The Savoy was ìthe placeî to come and dance and be
seen. Unlike its neighbor the Cotton Club, the Savoy was an integrated ballroom, where all
were welcome. ìStompiní at the Savoy, one of the great ìswing eraî hits came out of the club, and
was recorded by numerous artists.

The legendary vocalist appears here at the
Famous Door Cafe small club where the house
band was Babe Russin’s. Babe Russin was one
of the most prominent sax players in modern
jazz, and has the honor of being one of the
most recorded tenor saxophone players of all
time. With a rich warm sound that would cer-
tainly fit Holiday’s style, he was an in demand
performer and session player. Babe recorded and
performed with the biggest names of the Big
Band era including Benny Goodman, Glenn
Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Red
Nichols, and Count Basie.
