Working in the be-bop and hard bop idioms early in his career, John Coltrane (1926-1967)
helped pioneer the use of modal scales in jazz and later was in the forefront of free-form jazz.
He was astonishingly prolific, making about fifty recordings, as a leader during his career, and
appearing as a side-man on countless other recordings, notably with Miles Davis, Thelonius
Monk and others. Provenance: Private collector, acquired at the Guernsey, Jazz sale, February,
2005. The music paper bears a small “Jowcol” stamp from that sale, verifying its authenticity.
