The Dallas Railway & Terminal Company streetcars were among the most modern and
streamlined of the day. Twenty-five double-ended cars were built for the city of Dallas in 1945
by the Pullman Company. They looked more like railroad carriages than the old-fashioned
streetcars; and, like all public conveyances in the South, they were of course segregated. But,
being double ended, the ironical outcome was that the section for blacks in the back going one
way, would automatically became the section for whites on the return trip. This sign would have
hung in one of the stations.
