JUNG, CARL GUSTAV. Autograph Letter Signed, “Jung,” to “My dear

Kranefeldt!,” in German, disapproving of a report written by Meyer of his own German

seminar, inquiring whether he would write one for him, and congratulating him on the

birth of a child. 1

Küsnacht, 9 January 1932

[1,000/1,500]

Last year Meyer wrote a little report on my German seminar. This year, he tried it again, but

it turned out all wrong, mired down in emotional mush. I suppressed it.Would you be inter-

ested in doing something of that sort—with the necessary prudence? It wouldn’t have to be

anything long; just not ‘metaphorical,’ but rather stressing the epistemological difficulty.

Incidentally, I’m afraid that I haven’t yet congratulated you on the birth of a physical offshoot

. . . .The ways of the Lord are marvelous.Amen. One can do nothing of significance differently.

You can tell from this insight that I am getting old.”

. . . I am so glad you are being so energetic about the play. Don’t let the men get the best of it

in the big scene. I think its better to make Gladys madly in love with the artist if you make

him one, but I should be inclined to make him a Lord Burghersh [&] an eldest son. I think the

sympathy would be greater, & artists are rather too much used on the stage.”
