GOVERNOR URGES POSTMASTERTO

ADOPT HIS PROPOSED POSTAL REFORMS

27

HUNTINGTON, SAMUEL. Autograph Letter Signed, “Sam’l Huntington,” as

Governor, to Postmaster General Samuel Osgood, retained draft, urging him to adopt a

reform to the post rider system in use so as to reduce delay of urgent correspondence. 2

pages, 4to; lower edge reinforced with linen, docketed in his hand on terminal page. (MRS)

Norwich, 25 November 1789

[600/900]

. . .The public dispatches that pass between my office, & the Collectors office at New London; & the

Seat of the National Government are frequent & Important, & often require Immediate conveyance.

According to the present routine of the post riders, the correspondence is delayed near a week longer

than it would be, were the alteration which I have proposed to take place. . . . [T]he delay for want of

a regular post, taken both ways in receiving, & returning letters is a needless waste of about ten or

twelve days merely for want of a proper regulation of the post rider.”
