  • Notes: As president of the Arkansas state conference of the NAACP Daisy Lee Gatson Bates led the nine African-American children ("Little Rock 9") up the steps of Little Rock's Central High School. White reaction to integration was so violent that President Eisenhower had to send in 1000 federal troops to keep the peace. Robinson, himself a pioneer in the civil rights struggle, broke the color line in baseball when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
