Printed checks completed in manuscript, each signed by Mayor George Opdyke and others, and endorsed on verso, with "Riot Damages" printed in red; perforated cancellations, otherwise minimal wear. New York, 30 November and 17 December 1863

  • Notes: The first check is made out to John Winne for "services as examiner of riot damage claims"; the second is to County Auditor James Watson "on account of payrolls, Field, Staff & Companies, 5th Regt. N.Y.N.G. on duty, riots, July, Aug & Sept 1863."
