  • Notes: Dorothy Dandridge became the first black actress to receive an Academy Award nomination in the leading-role category for her performance as Carmen Jones. Oscar Hammerstein Jr. took Bizet's opera, rewrote the lyrics, changed the characters to African-Americans in the World War II era. The voices of Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Joe Adams, and Diahann Carroll were dubbed for songs that included "Dat's Love," "Dis Flower," and "Dere's a Cafe on de Corner."
