LEWIS W. HINE (1874-1940)
Boys in packing room. S.W. Brown Mfg. Co., Evansville, Indiana * Minnie Paster, 10 years old, Tending stand at Bowery and Bond Street, New York City. Together, 2 silver prints, the images measuring 4½x6½ and 4x3½ inches (11.4x16.5 and 10.2x9 cm.), the first mount 5½x8½ inches (14x21.6 cm.), the first with a partial caption label visible on mount verso and the second with a Library of Congress numeric notation in pencil on recto. 1908 & 1910

Provenance: The Estate of Howard Daitz, New York

  • Condition: The pair of Hine's vintage photographs is overall in good to very good condition. Both prints are bright and contrasty, with densely packed detail and tonal variety.

Under close inspection in strong, raking light, both prints evidence some surface imperfections, which are primarily confined to the edges and listed below. These imperfections do not distract our gaze from the beautiful and neat depiction of the sitters, and are visible only under strong raking light, not when viewing directly at the photographs. They are all typical to Hine's prints.

Print 1 (Boys in packing room): The surface evidences in strong raking light some silvering in the darkest areas of the print, as well as two small creases in the lower quadrant (in the flooring). The print is situated on a paper mount, which is trimmed more closely at the left and lower edges. A partial label apparently related to a different image is visible on verso.

Print 2 (Minnie Paster): The surface evidences scattered soft handling creases, but these are largely only visible in strong, raking light. A slightly longer diagonal crease can be found in the lower right corner when examining the print carefully. There is an isolated spot of trace soiling in the lower left corner. The print appears to be hinged closely to the mat at three corners. Black residue from a prior mount can be seen at the corners on verso.

Two compelling examples of Hine's imagery of children at work.
