(MAINE). A Patent for Plymouth in New-England. 4to, stitched; uncut, final blank defective, two horizontal folds; contemporary manuscript notations throughout. In a modern 1/4 morocco slip case and matching folder. Boston, 1751

  • Notes: A large tract of land in what is now Maine roughly coinciding with Kennebec County was granted to the proprietors of Plymouth Colony in 1640. This area was thinly settled until the 1750s, when the Plymouth Company was founded to sell off the land to settlers. This slim pamphlet reprints the key early documents from 1629 to 1662, and on the final page prints the call for settlers, ordering that "a Grant of One Hundred Acres of Land be made to each Family who will settle in either of the said Towns." This copy bears 15 autograph notes signed by Josiah Cotton as register of deeds, along with several minor manuscript corrections in his hand, attesting that the corrected text is an accurate transcript of the original records. Josiah Cotton (1680-1756) was the son of the Rev. John Cotton and a nephew of Cotton Mather. Evans 6761; Sabin 59034; Streeter sale II:678
