VARIOUS ARTISTS [RUSSIAN PHOTOMONTAGE.] Two posters. Crica 1930s.
Each approximately 19x28 inches.
Condition A. One is framed.
The art of the photomontage came of age in Russia in the decades following the October Revolution. Its key proponent was Gustav Klutsis, who was not only a pioneer, but also quickly became the undisputed master of the genre. The visual language of the photomontage was so appealing to the Soviet leaders that it fast became the preferred method of dispersing pictorial propaganda. Unable to keep up with the demand, a host of other talented artists followed in Klutsis's footsteps, churning out images to help promote all aspects of the Communist State. Some of these artists left prominent works behind them, while others labored in virtual anonymity. In either case the resulting posters are excellent documents of a entirely bygone social, political and artistic system.
