THE REVOLT AND CAPTURE OF "CIMARRONES" IN CUBA (CUBA.) Sobre palenques de Negros Cimarrones. [Regarding the fortified towns of the rebelling blacks.] Group of 41 official manuscript reports regarding an uprising by "negros cimarrones" ("untamed blacks") who had escaped into the countryside of Matanzas Province. 41 leaves, small folio. Matanzas, Cuba, December 1837-March 1838

  • Notes: Series of reports made to the provincial governor by Captain Antonio Garcia Gral and his subordinates. These reports provide an extraordinary account of a number of "negros cimarrones" ("maroons" in English) who had revolted and escaped into the forests of Ceira de Mocha in western Cuba.
They survived by raiding local farms and ranches, stealing livestock and other comestibles. The military was unable to subdue them and hired bounty hunters with dogs to enter the forests in pursuit. When finally caught, Captain Gral describes the condition of the blacks as wretched, some badly bitten by the dogs, and others wounded. In an almost unbelievable footnote, an officer asks for compensation to some of the trackers for death or injury to their dogs.
It is significant to note that the blacks are never referred to as "slaves." They probably recently arrived from Africa and hadn't been formally purchased yet.
