Our May 16 auction is headlined by two iconic female photographers, Dorothea Lange and Cindy Sherman. Innovators, trailblazers, and unmatched in their vision, both photographers challenge the viewer to reconsider their perspective and employ a powerful narrative voice throughout their imagery. Both works included in this auction—Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, 1936, and Untitled Film Still #52, 1979—are iconic examples of these photographers’ work. We are also pleased to offer a broad and inclusive selection of classical works, featuring Alfred Eisenstaedt’s Children at a Puppet Theater, Paris, 1963, printed 1991, Irving Penn’s platinum-palladium Father and Son with Eggs, Cuzco, 1948, printed 1978, Paul Strand’s Farmyard in Dordogne, France, 1950, Henri Cartier-Bresson’s portrait of Henri Matisse from 1944, printed 1980s, and a stunning work by Laura Aguilar Nature Self-portrait #12, 1996. We are also featuring a rare and striking Eugène Atget Coiffeur, Avenue de l’Observatoire, Paris, 1926. Additional photographers of note include Hiro, Anne Brigman, Laura Gilpin, Frederick Sommer, Minor White, Jessie Tarbox Beals, Andy Warhol, and much, much more.
