successful white crime series that starred Leo
Gorsey, Huntz Hall and the East Side Kids.
Here we have Louise Beavers as the kindly
warden of a reform school, and Harlem’s “Tuff
Kids.” “A Million Dollar Picture” according to

A lurid film starring Nina Mae McKinney.
(1912 - 1967) a talented and beautiful
African American actress who got her start on
Broadway . MGM as a result signed her to
what seemed to be a great five year contract.
However McKinney was kept to character roles.
She finally broke the contract after MGM cut
most of her scenes from a film, and left the
United States. Abroad she was accepted and
dubbed “The Black Garbo.” McKinney was
one of the first African-American film stars to
work on BBC television.
