An exceptional group of stills that include scenes from “The Betrayal,” “God’s Step
Children,” “Lem Hawkin’s Confession,” “Swing,” “Underworld.” Oscar Micheaux (1884-
1951) is the acknowledged pioneer of African American cinema. His first films grew out of his
three semi-autobiographical novels: “The Conquest,” (1913) The Forged Note,” (1915) and
the “Homesteader.” (1917) His first film, “The Homesteader” (1919) was basically a pas-
tiche of his first two novels, “The Homesteader” and the “Conquest.” He went on to write
and produce over 44 more films, including comedies, mysteries and romances, right up until the
1940’s.
