as he deserved to be. Modest and reserved, he was

never one to push himself forward; he spent in the

country a life of hard work and endeavor; far from the

big centers of art and detached from the coteries of

artists. He had to face many a difficult crisis and suffer

hard times, but, always a true artist, he never gave way

to despair, but preserved his strong enthusiasm, and

he never made concessions in his art.”
