(THAILAND.)
Pair of full-page watercolor or gouache illustrations for the
Phra Malai legend,
on small folio sheets; matted.
Thailand, circa 1885
[100/200]
The Buddhist text detailing Phra Malai’s visits to both heaven and hell were a common
subject inThai religious writings. One of the illustrations appears to depict a scene in heaven,
and the other more gruesome illustration must surely represent a scene in hell.
