Nineteenth Century

Nineteenth-century landscape painting is showcased by Francis Augustus Silva’s Beer’s Cottage, Far Rockaway, Long Island and Albert Bierstadt’s Rocky Mountain Landscape.

Twentieth Century

A range of paintings and works on paper by artists active during the twentieth century culminates in a single-owner private collection of Jared French drawings. Extensive studies for many of the paintings French executed throughout his career include That French Island and Man.

Modernism is represented by Suzy Frelinghuysen’s Act Three and Charles G. Shaw’s Beach Scene and Transition, which illustrate the influences of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism on the movement. Works by other important figures of the era include Isabel Bishop, Charles Burchfield, Alfred H. Maurer, Ben Shahn and Guy C. Wiggins.
