inches with red plastic (?) band in the
center; about the size and shape of a ciga-
rette lighter.
Birmingham, ALA, circa 1920’s -1930’s
[300/400]
This little bank may have been fashioned after
the St Luke’s “Penny” Banks created by
Maggie Lena Walker (1864-1934), the first
woman, white or black to found a bank in
America. It was meant to take dimes, and was
obviously part of a fund drive to save the St
Luke Church in Birmingham. The motto on
the bank, “United We Stick, Divided We’re
Stuck,” would imply some sort of problem.
According to Richard R. Wright’s Centennial
Encyclopedia of the A.M.E. Church Rev. N.
W. Brown was born in 1876, which would
probably date this little bank somewhere in the
1920’s or 1930’s.

Try It. Higgins
Laundry Soap. It’s the Best.
Carte-de-
visite of two African American men with
top hats, on which are two parts of an
advertisement for laundry soap.
Np, circa 1880’s
[300/500]
Following the Civil War and Reconstruction;
blacks, once reviled by many, slowly but surely
became one of the most popular vehicles for
advertisements. The Gold Dust Twins, Uncle
Ben, Aunt Jemima, and a host of other black
faces covered everything from baking powder
and lamp black to whiskey and tobacco. Here
we have a pair of black men, with tall top hats
carrying the message “ Try It. Higgins
Laundry Soap, It’s the Best.”
