This elegant gentleman, whom we were unable
to identify, would seem to be someone of impor-
tance; perhaps a veteran of the Civil War or a
high ranking member of a lodge. The photo-
graph itself might have been made from a
painting, or perhaps from a daguerreotype or
tintype that had been enhanced.

A touching scene of an elderly black lady, possi-
bly an ex-slave, seated in the doorway to her
cabin, a corncob pipe in her mouth; her sewing
at her feet. Cornelius Marion Battey was the
resident photographer at Tuskegee from 1916
to his death in 1927.
